Pacers Use Big First Inning to Trump Baseball in Non-Conference Tilt

AIKEN, SC -- USC Aiken blew a five-run lead in the top of the second inning only to take it back in the bottom half as the Pacers defeated Catawba 9-5 Friday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. Aiken improves to 32-16 overall while the Indians drop to 39-13.

Right fielder Will Tankersley had a stellar night at the plate for the Pacers going 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored. His home run in the second inning produced the game-winning runs.

Aiken blitzed Catawba starter JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami, OH) in the bottom of the first for five runs on six hits to take an early lead. The Pacers had three run-producing hits including a double by Ty Barkell during the inning. Bill Gerstenslager scored on a sacrifice fly while Byrce Baur came home on a throwing error at first base.

The Indians answered quickly in the second frame with five runs of their own against Aiken’s Wyatt Brown. Danny Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS) highlighted the inning with a two-RBI single to right that plated Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS). Parisi came around to score later on a fielding error by the second baseman while Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) both drove in a run with singles.

Tankersley put Aiken ahead for good in the bottom of the second inning as he sent a Jankowski offering over the leftfield wall for two more RBI and a 7-5 Pacer advantage.

Tankersley was a busy man on the night scoring off a Barkell single in the fifth inning and again in the seventh from a Gerstenslager hit as the Pacers went up 9-5.

Aiken reliever Ryan Milewski (7-0) shutdown the Indians from the third inning on, allowing just two hits and striking out six in seven innings of work to notch the victory. Jankowski (9-2) took the loss for Catawba giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six.

Beard led the Indians in hits with two while Parisi’s two RBI was tops in that category.

Catawba wraps up its regular season with the final game of the weekend series with the Pacers Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Aiken.
