#17 USC Aiken Holds Off Late Rally from Baseball
AIKEN, SC -- The #17 ranked Pacers of USC Aiken withstood a ninth-inning rally to edge #14 Catawba 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. With the weekend sweep, Aiken betters its record to 33-16 overall as the Indians fall to 39-14.
In the top of the ninth inning down 6-4, Catawba loaded the bases with no outs to set up a potential comeback. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) both had singles while Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) reached on an error by Aiken reliever Taylor Grover.
After Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) popped up to second, Underwood scored on a wild pitch from Grover to inch the Indians closer at 6-5. The Pacer hurler then got out of the jam by getting Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) to pop up to first and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) to strike out swinging as he picked up his sixth save of the year.
Will Tankersley picked up where he left off Friday night hitting a two-run homer to right in the first inning for the Pacers. Tankersley drove in Stephen Carmon who was on base after being hit by a pitch.
Catawba got one run back in the second when Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) reached on an error by the third baseman Kevin Gifford. The mistake allowed Bostian to cross home plate after he also reached on an earlier error.
Aiken pushed two more runs across in the second inning to go up 4-1. Ty Barkell scored on a Logan Erickson groundout to second base while Bryce Baur singled in Tyler Bourdo on the next play.
With two out in the second, Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) replaced starting pitcher Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) after he gave up four runs on three hits. The junior left-hander took the loss and dropped to 9-4 on the season.
To start the fourth frame, Bostian walked and then stole second and third base to position himself to score. Mario Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS) singled to right field two plays later, sending Bostian home and cutting the deficit in half at 4-2.
The Pacers responded in the fifth inning, again scoring at a two-run clip to go ahead 6-2. Baur led off the frame with a double and later scored along with Carmon on a Bill Gerstenslager single up the middle.
Bostian found his way on base again in the sixth inning, this time being hit by new Pacer pitcher Thomas McLeod. A Satterfield shot past McLeod with two outs brought in Bostian while Dula had scored earlier on a Zubillaga sacrifice fly to center that made it 6-4.
Kelly Holt (5-4) was the winning man on the mound for Aiken, going five innings with just one earned run and two hits against him. He walked four while striking out six.
Catawba managed just five singles against Pacer pitching on the day, but was aided by seven walks and four defensive errors from Aiken as well. Satterfield completed the day with two hits and an RBI for the Indians.
The Indians now wait to see if they make the NCAA Southeast Regional Baseball Tournament in three weeks’ time. The top six teams from each region make the tournament based on regional rankings released from the NCAA.
