Artem Ties Goal Record in Loss to Limestone
SALISBURY, NC -- Limestone pulled away from host Catawba in the second half to take a 17-7 victory in men’s lacrosse action between a pair of nationally-ranked teams on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. The fourth-ranked Saints improve to 15-1, while the eighth-ranked Catawba Indians end their season at 14-3.
Leading by two goals at the break, Limestone outscored Catawba 5-1 in both the third and fourth quarters to take the contest. Jackson Decker scored the last of his five goals to start a five-goal run for the Saints in the third quarter. Shayne Jackson scored twice in the surge. Limestone also tallied the first five goals to start the final quarter.
Decker scored three first-quarter goals to help the Saints to a 5-1 lead. Catawba responded in the second quarter to close the game to 7-5 at the half. Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King) got Catawba within the two goals with just 14 seconds left in the half. The goal marked his 45th of the season which tied a school record.
Decker had five goals and an assist to pace Limestone. Jackson picked up three goals, while Riley Loewen had a goal and four helpers. Artem and John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) scored three goals each for the Indians.
Limestone held a 41-30 edge in shots and won 20 of the 27 face-offs. Jake Ternosky went 19-of-26 on his attempts for the Saints. Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods HS) recorded 14 saves in goal for Catawba. Steve Gartelman posted 10 stops for Limestone.
