Sweep of Presbyterian keeps Volleyball tied for SAC leadCLINTON, SC -- Catawba College's sophomore hitter Hope Miller (Newton, NC) tallied a team-high 19 kills and added 14 digs to lead the Lady Indians to a 30-28, 35-33, 30-28 win over Presbyterian College in South Atlantic Conference women's volleyball action Tuesday night at Templeton Center. Catawba maintains its share of the SAC lead, improving to 20-8 overall and 11-1 in the league. The Lady Blue Hose fall to 19-11 and 8-4. The Lady Indians took control early in the first game and led 14-11 on a kill by senior hitter Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE), before PC trimmed the lead to 18-15 on kill by junior middle hitter Lindsay Mitchell (Chapin, SC). Catawba pushed the lead to 24-18 before the Lady Blue Hose used a 6-2 run, highlighted by a pair of kills by Mitchell, to pull within 27-25. The match was tight down the stretch, but Catawba prevailed 30-28 on a game-winning kill by Miller. The second game saw the Lady Blue Hose run out to an early 10-7 lead on a kill by sophomore hitter Donja Bobbitt (San Antonio, TX.). Catawba cut the lead to 17-16 on consecutive kills by sophomore middle Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC). PC continued to hold the lead until late in the game when Miller notched a pair of kills to pull the Lady Indians even at 28-28. The game went back and forth down the stretch, but a pair of kills by sophomore hitter Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) gave the Lady Indians a 35-33 win and a 2-0 lead. The third game was all PC early as the Lady Blue Hose opened a 12-7 lead on consecutive kills by Mitchell. Catawba chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 19-19 on a kill by sophomore hitter Chrissi Harrison (Hickory, NC). Mitchell tallied a pair of kills and a solo block to give PC the lead at 24-22, but moments later Catawba tied the game at 25-25 on a kill by Hewitt. PC's freshman middle Jasmin Brown (Alpharetta, GA) and Catawba's Harrison traded kills twice down the stretch to keep the game tied at 28-28. The Lady Indians finished off the third game and secured the win on a solo block by Hewitt to end the match. The Lady Indians also got 18 kills and five digs by LaRoche, while senior setter Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) dished out 55 assists. Presbyterian was led by Mitchell's team-high 12 kills and five total blocks, while Brown and Bobbitt added nine kills apiece. Junior setter Kellie Haire (Clearwater, FL) dished out 38 assists on the night. Bobbitt added 13 digs while sophomore libero Kirbie Wallace (Orlando, FL) added 14 digs.
