Tusculum Rallies Past Baseball in Regional Opener
MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Tusculum scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings after resuming a halted game to take a 4-3 win over fifth-seeded Catawba on Friday morning at the NCAA II Southeast Regional at Scarborough Field. The second-seeded and nationally second-ranked Pioneers improve to 47-8 and will next play Francis Marion in a game scheduled late Friday night. The 21st-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 39-15 and will face an elimination game on Friday afternoon against the loser of a game between Mount Olive and Lander.
Catawba led 2-0 after scoring a pair of unearned runs in the opening inning on Thursday afternoon. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) doubled home the first run with one of his three hits in the game. He added a RBI single in the third to push the lead to 3-0. The Pioneers got a run in their third on a single by Alexi Colon and creeped within 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by Tripper Crisson in the sixth. Rains invaded Scarborough Field after the top of the seventh and the game was halted until Friday morning.
Tusculum quickly tied the game, benefitting from a Catawba error and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Heath Comerford . A one-out single from Aaron Guinn in the eight plated the eventual winning run for the Pioneers. Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) led off the Catawba ninth with a double, but pinch runner Justin Morris (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS) was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a ground ball to short by Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat HS).
Furr was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI for the Indians. Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) pitched into the sixth for Catawba on Thursday, allowing two runs (one earned) off seven hits. A ground out from Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) accounted for the other Indian run. Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) each had two hits for Catawba.
