Mainer's two goals propels #19 Women's Soccer to sixth straight win

SALISBURY, NC – Senior Megan Mainer (Raleigh, NC) scored a pair of goals to help 19th-ranked Catawba College to a 4-0 win over visiting King College in women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Frock Field. The Lady Indians, winners of six straight, improve to 12-2-1, while King falls to 11-5. Catawba will host Mars Hill on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Mainer opened the scoring in the 17th minute off a cross from Kim O’Hagan (Branchburg, NJ). O’Hagan’s initial cross attempt had been blocked, but on her second try she lofted a cross to the back post that Mainer headed in. The score would remain 1-0 until 10 minutes into the second half when Catawba struck twice in just over a two minute span to pull away. Lisa DeMeyer (Jamestown, NC) scored at the 55:58 mark on a long shot that was not handled by the Tornado keeper. Mainer would strike again at the 58:14 mark, with a flick-header off a corner kick from Cathrine Balentine (Charlotte, NC). Senior Charlsie Downing (Bloomington, IL) capped the scoring in the 75th minute off a pass from Monica Ortega (Miami,FL). Catawba keeper Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) made three saves in recording the shutout, her eighth of the season and 29th in her stellar career.
