Faughnan's 2nd-Half Tally Lifts Men's Soccer to Opening Win
FLORENCE, SC -- The Catawba men’s soccer team grabbed a 2-1 win over host Francis Marion on Thursday night at Hartsler Field. Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville,NC/Jacksonville HS) netted the game-winner in the 70th minute. It was the opener for both teams.
Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) put the Indians on top with a goal in the 13th minute. Catawha held the Patriots without a shot in the opening half, but FMU pulled even on the hour as Joergen Tesdal fed Alex Blandin after a Catawba turnover.
Faughnan responded 10 minutes later as he headed home a cross from Matt Gallagher (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill HS/Saint Leo). Freshman Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) also assisted on the winner. Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) racked up four saves, all in the second half, in goal for Catawba.
Each team got off eight shots, while Catawba withstood a dozen FMU corners. The Indians had eight corner kicks. Catawba return to action on Sunday as they host Lees-McRae at 7 pm.
