Thompson named SAC Women's Soccer Freshman of the YearCatawba College took home a pair of the league’s top honors and placed six players on the All-South Atlantic Conference teams in women’s soccer for 2002. Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) was tabbed as Freshman of the Year, while John Cullen was selected as Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Thompson, a forward, has netted a team-leading 14 goals this season, which ties for the fifth best season for a Lady Indians and is three shy of the record of 17 in a season. She ranks third in the SAC in goals and in total points as she has added nine assists. Six of her 14 tallies this season have been game-winners, including two in the final 10 seconds of matches. Joining Thompson on the All-SAC first team is fellow freshmen Maran Bock (Avondale, AZ), at midfielder, and Lisa DeMeyer (Jamestown, NC), at defender. Senior goalkeeper Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) was the at-large selection on the first team. Second team honors went to junior forward Jamie Fink (Woodbridge, VA) and freshman defender Lindsay Layman (Hagerstown, MD). Bock is second behind Thompson in scoring with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists), while DeMeyer has a goal and an assist, while helping the defense to a 0.75 goals against average and nine shutouts. Clayton has posted a 0.72 GAA, while recording nine shutouts. For her career, the senior has set a new school and league mark with 30 shutouts. Fink is second on the team with eight goals, while Layman has started every match this season as a sweeper. Catawba tied for the 2002 SAC Championship with a 5-1-1 mark. Overall the Lady Indians are 13-2-1 and are currently ranked third in the Southeast Region and 16th in NCAA II.
