Whitmer's 23 Kills Pushes Volleyball Past Brevard
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba grabbed a four-set win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians took the match 25-14, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-23 to improve to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 7-2 and 1-2.
Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) reeled off 23 kills to pace Catawba. She hit at 43%, making just three errors in 47 swings and also served up three aces. Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 40 assists with 10 digs with libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Henry HS) collecting 24 digs.
Brevard got a dozen kills from Kortney Conner (Franklin, NC) to go along with 14 kills, while Joy Oswalt (Cape Carteret, NC) added 11 kills and Fatima Gharachorloo (Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA) tallied 10 kills. Oswalt added two aces and two blocks. Setter Kayla Hanus (Kent, WA) dished out 42 assists and recorded 19 digs.
Catawba easily win the opening set, racing to a 7-1 lead behind the serving of Whitmer, who had three aces in the run. Consecutive kills by Whitmer kept the Lady Indians out in front 13-5. Raye would kill off the set point.
Brevard rallied in set two. Down 18-16, a kill from Oswalt and an ace from Hanus started a five-point run that pushed the Tornados to a 21-18 lead. An ace by Raye got the Lady Indians within 21-20, but a kill from an Oswalt kept Brevard on top. The set ended on a kill and ace by Oswalt.
In the third set, Catawba got three kills in a 4-2 run that staked the Lady Indians to a 12-9 lead. Two kills from Whitmer and an ace from Abby Pennington (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg HS) upped the margin to 20-14. Whitmer added two more kills later in the set to help give Catawba a two sets to one lead.
Trailing by four early in the fourth set, Brevard battled back to tie it up at 12-all. The teams traded points until Catawba put together a three-point spurt on kills from Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland HS) and Whitmer to lead 19-16. Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) gave Catawba a 24-20 edge, but Brevard ran off three straight points to get within a point. Pennington finally killed off the match for the Lady Indians.
The Lady Indians host non-conference foe Armstrong on Saturday at noon.
