Football falls to third-ranked Carson-Newman 34-9

SALISBURY, NC – Carson-Newman, ranked third in the AFCA Division II poll, rolled up 548 yards of offense, including 450 the ground and defeated host and ninth-ranked Catawba 34-9 in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Stadium at Salisbury High School.  With the win, the Eagles improve to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the SAC and clinch at least a share of the SAC title.  Catawba falls to 7-2 and 5-1.
Carson-Newman entered with the nations top-ranking offense and did little to hurt those numbers.  Senior Randy Bell (Maben,MS) ran off 44 yards on Carson-Newman’s first play, which would lead to a 25-yard field goal by Kjell Lorentzen (Trondheim,NORWAY).

The Eagles missed on a 47-yard field goal on its next possession, then got a touchdown on its fourth try.  Bell ripped off another 44 yard run on the drive’s first play and quarterback Leonard Guyton (Thomasville,GA) took it in two plays later from 19 yards out for a 10-0 lead with 1:13 left in the opening quarter.  Carson-Newman marched to the Tribe one on its first possession of the second quarter, but penalties limited the Eagles to another Lorentzen field goal and a 13-0 advantage.

Catawba would get on the board later in the quarter after a fumble by Bell near midfield.  Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) ran for 18 yards to help set up a 43-yard field goal by Allan Rohrbaugh (Lexington, NC) with 4:56 remaining in the half.  After forcing a punt, Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) tossed a 58-yard strike to Cedric Squirewell (Ridgeway, SC) to the Eagle nine and Samples ran in from the eight on third down to reduce the margin to 13-9, but the point after was missed.

Carson-Newman began the second half with a 15-play, 75-yard march that ended with a one-yard plunge by Guyton.  After on interception inside their own 10-yard line, the Eagles used just seven plays to go 91 yards, the last 58 coming on a 3rd-and-13 run by Lydell Blue (Soddy Daisy,TN) to put the Eagles on top 27-9 with 4:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Catawba would fumble on its next two possessions, the second inside the Eagle 10.  Carson-Newman would drive 91 yards in eight plays after the turnover to ice the game on a 50-yard screen pass from Guyton to Bell with 9:03 remaining.  The Indians entered among the national leaders in turnover margin and had lost only one fumble on the year.  Catawba had three turnovers on the afternoon to just a pair for the Eagles.

Bell finished with 208 yards on 24 carries and caught two passes for 69 yards and a score.  Blue ran for 88 yards, while Guyton ran for 81 yards and two scores, while completing 4-of-16 passes for 98 yards and another score.  Wallace led the Tribe ground attack with 85 of the teams 108 yards, while Samples completed 13-of-29 passes for 183 yards.  Squirewell had 96 yards receiving on five catches.
