(10/10/12) Men's Soccer Upsets #8 Wingate SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba upset #8 Wingate 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The win marked the second victory over a nationally-ranked squad for the Catawba Indians this season, who improve to 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 8-2 and 5-1. Catawba scored first, just 33 seconds into the contest, when Valentin Nava (Salisbury, NC/Carson HS) one-timed a cross from Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS). That would be the lone goal of the second half as the Indians took a 1-0 lead to the halftime locker room. Wingate tied the score 1-1 in the 48th minute, as freshman defender Victor Tozelli (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) knocked in a goal after a cross from Gui Lima (Sao Paolo, BRAZIL) . It was his second goal of the season. Catawba retook the lead 10 minutes later when Corey Faughnan (Jacksonville, NC/Jacksonville HS) sent a ball toward goal that was put in by Ezra Ntirugelegwa (Durham, NC/Jordan HS). Spencer Preston (Estero, FL/Estero HS) sealed the win with a minute to play when drove in a ball from Matt Gallagher (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill HS/St. Leo) near the top of the box. Catawba goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) made six saves. Wingate keeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA) posted two saves.
