Mainer's goal lifts Women's Soccer to tournament title

GREENEVILLE, TN – Senior Megan Mainer (Raleigh, NC) headed home a corner kick to lift the 16th-ranked Catawba Lady Indians to a 1-0 win over fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne to claim the 2002 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The Lady Indians, the #2-seed and league co-champions, avenge a regular-season loss to the Bears and improve to 15-2-1 with their ninth straight win. Catawba should advance to the NCAA Southeast Regional as they entered the week ranked second in the region with the top three teams earning bids. Lenoir-Rhyne ends its season at 13-5-2. The tournament title marks the six time Catawba has claimed the SAC Tournament Championship. The Lady Indians also won the title in 1993, 1994, 1997, 1998 and 1999 and remain undefeated in six tournament championship matches. Catawba’s defense did not allow a goal in the three tournament wins as Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) posted her 11th shutout on the season to tie Scherrie Dalton’s school record. It was the 32nd in her career which are league and school marks. The teams battle through a scoreless half with Catawba having more of the scoring opportunities. Maran Bock (Avondale, AZ) had one chance saved by Julie Crosby and were denied on four consecutive corners in the final two minutes of the opening half. Just over two minutes into the second half, Mainer drove home a cross from Lisa DeMeyer (Jamestown, NC) for the lone goal. The Lady Indians continued to pressure the Bears, but could not add to their lead. #4 LENOIR-RHYNE (13-5-2) 0 0 -- 0 #2 CATAWBA (15-2-1) 0 1 -- 1 SCORING SUMMARY C - 47:18 – Megan Mainer (6) (Lisa DeMeyer) Shots at Goal: Catawba 9, Lenoir-Rhyne 5 Corner Kicks: Catawba 6, Lenoir-Rhyne 0 Goalkeeper Saves: Lenoir-Rhyne – Julie Crosby 4 Catawba - Kim Clayton 1 Offsides: Catawba 2, Lenoir-Rhyne 0 #######
