Women's Soccer to play at North Florida in NCAA II Southeast Regional

Catawba College has earned one of 24 bids to the 2002 NCAA Division II Womenís Soccer Tournament. The tournament consists of three teams in each of eight regional. Catawba is seeded third in the Southeast Region and are joined by a pair of Peach Belt Conference schools, Kennesaw State and North Florida. The Lady Indians were co-champions of the South Atlantic Conference and won the league tournament with a 1-0 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday. It marked the ninth straight win for Catawba, improving to 15-2-1 overall. Catawba will travel to North Florida on Wednesday to face the #2-seeded Lady Ospreys at 6 p.m. Kennesaw State, a first year program, won both the Peach Belt regular season and tournament title. Catawba returns to the regional for the first time since 1997, when the Lady Indians won the championship with a 2-0 win at Presbyterian. The lady Indians earned its sixth SAC Tournament title after sharing the regular season title for just the second time in school history. Catawba is nearing a school record for goals in a season, but will enter the regional without its top scorer and SAC Freshman of the Year, Kyley Thompson, who broke her collar bone in the Lady Indiansí semifinal win over Wingate. Thompson had 14 goals in 16 matches this season. Freshman Maran Bock, eight goals and six assists, and junior Jamie Fink, eight goals, will look to pick up the scoring punch. All three teams in the Southeast Regional posted perfect home records, with the Lady Ospreys going 9-0. North Florida fell in the semifinals to Clayton State on penalty kicks and stand 15-2-2 on the year. Kennesaw State will host the winner of the first round match this weekend. The Owls bring a prefect 18-0 on the year. All three teams were ranked nationally entering last week. Kennesaw was ninth, Catawba 16th and North Florida 20th. The regional winner will advance to face the champion of South Region the weekend of Nov. 23-24. Barry is that regionís top seed with a 17-0 mark. Christian Brothers (17-1) and West Florida (10-3-1) are the other two teams in the South Region. #######
