Seniors Lead Volleyball to Win in Home Finale
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba closed out its home schedule with a four-set win over Newberry in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 11-12 overall and 8-7 in the SAC with the 25-20, 17-25, 25-19 and 25-19 win. The Wolves fall to 16-13 and 9-8.
Seniors Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) and Carson Brewer (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek HS/Cape Fear CC) combined for 38 of Catawba's 56 kills on Senior Day to help lead the Lady Indians. Both posted doubles as Whitmer tallied 21 kills and 14 digs with Brewer adding 17 kills and 16 digs.
Senior setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) delivered 37 assists, 15 digs and six kills, while senior libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Henry HS) collected 31 digs. Senior Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) had three kiss and nine digs, while senior Denise Grissom (Stokesdale, NC/Rockingham Co. HS) returned from an injury and posted one dig.
Samantha Parrish (Angola, IN) led Newberry with 17 kills, 30 digs and three aces. Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, IN) added 14 kills and 13 digs. Setter Blair Browning (New Lexington, OH) had 42 assists and 12 digs.
Catawba pulled away late to take the opening set. Kills from Brewer and Alli Parrish in a four-point run gave the Lady Indians a 20-16 edge. The Wolves pulled within 23-20, but a kill from Whitmer was followed by an ace from Alli Parrish to close out the set.
Samantha Parrish had three kills and an ace to help Newberry jump out to a 12-8 lead in set two. With the Wolves leading 21-17, Samantha Parrish had three kills along with one from Prachar to win the set. Kills from Raye and Whitmer helped Catawba pull away from a 13-13 tie in set three to lead 18-014. Whimer collected back-to-back kills to push the lead to 21-16 and a Newberry error would end the set.
Brewer and Whitmer led the fourth set charge as Catawba raced to a 7-1 lead. Whitmer served two consecutive aces after a kill from each for a 4-1 edge then Brewer followed with three straight kills. Samantha Parrish tried to rally Newberry with a pair of aces to reduce the margin to 7-5, but a five-point Catawba run pushed the score to 14-7. Three kills from Whitmer helped keep Catawba up at 17-11 and Raye eventually killed off the match.
Catawba finishes up the regular season with three road matches next week. First up is Wingate on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
