Volleyball Falls to LMU to End Regular Season
HARROGATE, TN – Lincoln Memorial rallied back after dropping the opening set to top Catawba in four sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Mars Gym. The Lady Railsplitters improve to 20-12 overall and 12-6 in the SAC with the 20-25, 25-21, 25-10 and 25-20 win. The Catawba Indians fall to 12-14 and 9-9.
Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) led Catawba with 18 kills, while Carson Brewer (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek HS/Cape Fear CC) added another 12 kills. Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) each came up just a few kills shy of triple doubles. Raye had 14 digs, 26 assists and eight kills with Parrish collecting 13 digs, 17 assists and seven kills. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Henry HS) recorded 29 digs.
Blair Fowler posted a match-high 27 kills to pace Lincoln Memorial. She added 14 digs and four blocks. Jazzy Oates and Jennifer Drumm each had nine kills with Drumm adding 10 digs. Kristen Cantrell registered 16 digs and Brittany Pugh handed out 29 assists with 10 digs.
With the opening set tied at 8-8, Raye and Parrish had kills to start a 6-2 Catawba run that ended with a Parrish ace for a 14-10 Lady Indian edge. An ace by Abby Pennington (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg HS) and a kill from Whitmer pushed the lead to 20-14. Pennington and Whitmer closed out the set with kills.
Whitmer served an ace and posted consecutive kills to help Catawba to an early 6-2 lead in set two. The Lady Indians led 9-4 before LMU began to rally. A kill by Oates cut the margin to 10-8 and a Fowler kill cut the deficit to 14-13 before the Lady Splitters pulled even at 15-all. Brewer had Catawba up 17-15 after a kill, but LMU ran off four straight points that Drumm capped with a kill. Whitmer pulled the Lady Indians within 22-21, but Fowler had a kill then combined with Drumm on a block that ended the set.
Lincoln Memorial rolled in set three. Fowler’s kill made it 5-1 early and a later kill had LMU up 14-6. That kill started an eight-point run the put the Lady Railsplitters on top 21-6. Oates would kill off the final point.
Catawba rallied from an early 9-4 deficit in set four with five straight points to tie the set on a Raye kill. Two kills from Whitmer and an error on LMU put the Lady Indians up 12-10. From there, LMU went on a 9-1 run to take control at 19-13. Catawba pulled to within 23-19, but LMU had enough to close out the match.
The two teams will have a rematch on Friday in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament which is being held at Brevard College.
