HICKORY, NC – Lenoir-Rhyne pulled away in the second half to post a 44-14 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium/  The Bears improve to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the SAC, claiming the league championship.  The Catawba Indians end their season at 4-7 and 2-5.

One of the highlights for Catawba on the afternoon was the nine tackles by senior linebacker Cory Johnson (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS).  The total gave him 138 on the season which surpassed the previous school record of 134 set by John Williams in 1995.  Johnson posted 96 tackles over the final six games of the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, Lenoir-Rhyne got on the board behind a 34-yard scoring run by Graham Duncan midway through the second quarter.  Reuben Haynes added a 53-yard touchdown run just a little over two minutes later to stretch the lead to 14-0.

Catawba cut the margin in half in the closing minute of the half when BJ Sherrill (Cleveland, NC/W. Rowan HS) scored from a yard out on fourth down.  The Bears got one of the game’s biggest plays on the ensuing kickoff when Jarrod Spears dashed 95 yards for an answering score to give Lenoir-Rhyne a 20-7 edge at the break.

In the third quarter, Lenoir-Rhyne scored the only 10 points.  Zach Neumann kicked a 24-yard field and Spears added a nine-yard run for a 30-7 advantage.  Haynes put the game out of reach on a one-yard with 10:42 remaining.  Sherrill added a second scoring run, this one from five yards for Catawba, before Teverrius Jones capped the scoring on a 27-yard run.

Lenoir-Rhyne ran for a whopping 513 yards in the win, while holding the Indians to just 55 on the ground.  Haynes led the Bear ground attack with 130 yards and the two scores.  Duncan followed with 94 yards.  Hayes completed two-of-three passes for 17 yards.

Sherrill threw for 174 yards for Catawba, completing 19-of-34 passes.  He added 34 yards rushing wit the two scores.  Freshman Gary Williams (Southport, NC/S. Brunswick HS) caught four passes for 23 yards to lead the Indian receivers.

Defensively, freshman Ed Robinson (Callahan, FL/Paxon School) led Catawba with 11 tackles, while LJ McCray (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) added 10.  Johnson also had a fumble recovery to go with his nine tackles.  Chris Christian and Michael Green had interceptions for Lenoir-Rhyne.
