Martin's Double-Double Leads Men's Basketball to Win at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba got a double-double from Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) and ran away from host Pfeiffer to post a 68-52 win over the Falcons in the consolation game of the Best Western of Albemarle Highway 52 Shootout on Sunday afternoon at Pfeiffer's Merner Gym. The Catawba Indians even their record at 1-1, while the Falcons fall to 0-2.
Martin scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Catawba. He went 4-of-6 from behind the arc and also added three assists and four steals. Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) added 16 points and eight boards, while blocking five shots. Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) came off the bench to score 11 points.
Both teams struggled early and Catawba trailed 9-8 after eight minutes, making just three of its first 12 shots. The Indians caught fire at that point, making five straight attempts and 7-of-10 to go up 25-14 with six minutes left in the half.
Pfeiffer closed the gap to 27-23, but Catawba would hold a 32-26 edge at the break. Martin had 13 points in the opening 20 minutes with Little adding eight points and five boards. Fourteen of Catawba's 17 turnovers came in the first half.
Six minutes into the second half, Pfeiffer trailed just 40-36, but Martin and Houston hit consecutive baskets to ignite Catawba. A Houston triple pushed the lead back to 11 at 49-38 and Martin followed with his fourth three of the game to up the margin to 52-38 with just under 11 minutes left. The Indians held a double-digit edge the rest of the way, extending their lead to as much as 20 points.
Catawba shot 44% for the game and canned eight three-pointers. Pfeiffer never could find its shooting touch, making only 28% from the field and going 3-of-17 from behind the arc. Catawba also held a 42-39 edge on the boards.
The Indians will play its home opener on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Lees-McRae.
