Seniors go out winners as Volleyball sweeps Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, NC – Catawba College closed out its 2002 volleyball campaign with a three-game sweep of host Pfeiffer on Tuesday night at Merner Gym. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 30-19, 30-19 and 30-26, improving to 25-7 to end the season. Pfeiffer falls to 10-19. Catawba took control of the opening game with a 13-1 run to open a 17-5 advantage. Sophomore’s Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) and Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) keyed the run. Hawkins had four of her game-high six kills early on, while Harrison added five kills. Crystal Furmaniuk (Mooresville, NC) had four kills, an ace and a block in the opening game to pace Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer jumped out to a 13-10 edge in the second game, using a seven-point run to overcome a 10-6 deficit. Catawba would respond by scoring 16 of the next 19 points to lead 26-16. Freshman Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) had a pair of kills and two blocks in the Lady Indian surge. Sophomore Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) added a pair of kills and an ace to finish off the game. Lauren Plyler (Mooresville, NC) recorded five kills and a block in the game for the Falcons. Pfeiffer led most of the early going in the deciding game, leading 18-14 before a 13-3 run by Catawba put the visitors ahead 25-20. Harrison had three kills in the run for Catawba. An ace by Betsi O’Shields (Landrum, SC) gave Catawba a 28-22 lead, but Pfeiffer reeled off four consecutive points to draw within 28-26. Sophomore Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) had a kill and block for the final two points to give Catawba the win. Hawkins led Catawba with 10 kills, while Harrison had nine kills and two blocks. Three seniors were playing their final game for Catawba. Meredith Jones (Eden, NC) led the team with 14 digs and 26 assists and added a block. Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) had six kills, four digs and a block, while Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) had a kill, an ace and five digs. Pfeiffer was led by Plyler, who had 14 kills and three blocks, while Leslie Singer (Naples, FL) added 17 digs. Junior Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) set a new school record in average digs per game at 5.56 in her 100 games. Her 556 for the season mark the fifth best total at Catawba. Wilkes recorded the fourth best assist total in a season with 1,115 and the third best average at 10.23 in her 109 games. Harrison’s .338 hitting percentage was the fourth best for a Lady Indian. Catawba’s seniors helped the team to a 94-40 record over their career, which included a pair of South Atlantic Conference Championships, one SAC Tournament title and the league’s first appearance in the NCAA II South Regional. LaRoche played in 463 games over her career and totaled 1,138 kills for seventh place on the all-time charts. She added 512 digs, 255 blocks and 68 aces. Wilkes saw action in 433 games and registered 2,570 assists to place in a tie for third all-time. She finished second all-time, behind her sister, Selena, with 208 aces and added 951 digs. Jones played in 101 games over her career and had 414 assists, 135 digs and 23 kills.
