Men's Basketball Cruises Past Lees-McRae Behind Little's Double-Double
SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds to help pace host Catawba to an 83-62 win over Lees-McRae in men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The win lifts the Catawba Indians to 2-1, while the Bobcats fall to 0-3.
Little was joined in double figures by freshmen Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Julian Sampah (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day). Each tossed in 11 points. Maurice Knight (Portsmouth, VA/W. Branch HS/Kansas City CC) grabbed 11 rebounds to help Catawba to a 49-34 edge on the glass.
Charles Clarke (Orlando, FL) led Lees-McRae with 11 points. Jeremiah Henry (Semmes, AL) and Daniel Sepokas (Illawong, AUSTRALIA) each had nine points and five rebounds. The Bobcats shot just 35% for the game and started the night hitting just two of their first 25 shots.
With Lees-McRae struggling to score, Catawba went up 18-7 on a tip-in by Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) at the 8:40 mark and led by double-digits the rest of the way. A three-pointer by Houston and a three-point play by Little pushed the Indian lead to 35-15 with just under five minutes remaining in the half.
Freshman Reggie Perkins (Greensboro, NC/Phillips Exeter) and Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) hit consecutive three-pointers to extend the margin to 41-18 before the Bobcats rallied back within 43-28 at the break on three-pointers by Clarke and DJ Brown (Anderson, SC). Catawba shot a sizzling 61% in the opening stanza.
The Indians never let the Bobcats back in the game as Edwards and Martin beat the shot clock with three-pointers early in the second half to give Catawba a 49-30 edge. When Little hit consecutive baskets, the Indians held a 70-44 advantage with 8:22 remaining, their largest margin of the contest.
Little canned 7-of-11 shots and was perfect on three shots at the line. He also blocked three shots. Martin had eight points and eight rebounds. The Indians would shoot 49% for the contest and went 9-of-22 (41%) from behind the arc.
The Indians return to Goodman Gym this weekend in the Salisbury Roundball Classic. Catawba will face Paine on Friday at 8 p.m. and Chowan on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Other games will see Chowan against St. Augustine’s on Friday at 6 p.m. and St. Augustine’s vs. Paine on Saturday at 2 p.m.
