Men's Basketball Gets Balanced Scoring in Win Over Paine
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba put five players in double figures and held off a second half rally by visiting Paine to post an 80-71 victory in men’s basketball action at the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-1, while the Lions fall in their opener.
Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) led Catawba with 17 points, while three players, Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS), Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS), and Julian Sampah (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day), each added 13 points. Maurice Knight (Portsmouth, VA/W. Branch HS/Kansas City CC) rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points.
Catawba shot 64% in the opening half in racing to a 45-24 edge. Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) put the Indians up by double figures midway through the opening half. Martin connected on a pair of free throws with four minutes to go in the half to give Catawba its largest margin at 36-14.
Paine began to cut into the margin at the start of the final half. Adrian Caldwell (Marion, LA) reduced the deficit to 10 on a pair of free throws with 13 minutes remaining and Mario Jordan (Sandersville, GA) brought the Lions within single digits at 57-49 on a steal and layup with 10:35 left. A three-pointer by Jordan cut the margin to 57-54 with 8:54 left.
Edwards and Houston hit three-pointers for Catawba to push the lead back to 67-59 with 4:24 remaining and Catawba canned 8-of-10 free throws in the final 1:12 to hold its lead.
Jordan scored 18 of his game-high 20 points after the break to spark Paine. Caldwell and Sean Morgan (Atlanta, GA) each had 11 points for the Lions. Paine shot just 32% in the first half.
Edwards added nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals for the Indians. Catawba connected on 58% from the field and went 23-of-31 (74%) at the line. The Indians committed 16 of its 21 turnovers in the second half.
In the opening game of the Classic, St. Augustine’s rolled past Chowan 75-58. Catawba faces Chowan on Saturday at 4 p.m. St. Augustine’s vs. Paine will face off prior to that contest at 2 p.m.
