Bully's Last-Second Basket Gives Women's Basketball First Win
SALISBURY, NC -- Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) hit a driving layup with 1.6 seconds left to give visiting Catawba a 68-66 win over Livingstone in women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Trent Gym. The Catawba Indians grab their first win and improve to 1-2, while the Lady Blue Bears fall to 2-2.
The teams went back-and-forth over the final three minutes with the game tied at 60-all. Cierra York put Livingstone up 62-60 with 2:44 remaining and Bully answered with two free throws to retie the game. Tyesha Tharpe had the Lady Blue Bears back on top with 2:03 left, but Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) pulled Catawba even on a basket with 1:41 remaining.
After on offensive foul, Catawba broke the press and Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) gave Catawba a 66-64 lead with 1:23 to go. Each team missed shots on their next possession and Livingstone called timeout with 22 seconds left. Kelcyn Manurs drove in to tie the score on a layup with 11 seconds to play and Catawba called a timeout at midcourt with 6.5 seconds remaining. Bully took the inbounds pass in the backcourt and drove all the way for her winning layup.
McPhail equaled her collegiate career-high of 23 points which she scored as a freshman for Paine. She canned 10-of-15 shots and added eight rebounds. Bully tallied 18 points with seven rebounds and seven assists. Merritt also reached double-digits with 12 points, while Quaneasia Coleman (Duluth, GA/Northview HS) grabbed nine rebound.
York had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Livingstone. Tharpe added 16 points with Tiffany Evans chipping in with 14 points. The Lady Blue Bears shot 46% from the field to 42% for the Lady Indians. Catawba held a 41-35 edge on the boards.
Catawba trailed by five early and battled back to take an 18-17 lead on a Bully layup with 7:07 to go in the half. Evans put the Lady Blue Bears right back on top with a three-pointer and Livingstone led 29-22 after an Evans layup. Janna Dixon (Advance, NC/W. Forsyth HS) hit a three-pointer to pull the Lady Indians within 29-25 at the break.
Manurs gave Livingstone a 39-33 lead with 14:49 left before Catawba fought back to go up 43-42 on a layup by Coleman with 12:57 to play. McPhail had Catawba up 60-55 with just under five minutes left, but Livingstone got a layup by Sharpe and a three-pointer by Evans to tie the game at 60 and set the stage for the battle down the stretch.
Catawba returns to Goodman Gym on Friday, hosting JC Smith at 8 p.m. in the Comfort Suites Classic. Barton will face Lenoir-Rhyne in the opening game at 6 p.m. L-R will play JCSU on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Catawba and Barton facing off at 4 p.m.
