Women's Basketball Wins Second Straight
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba put four players in double figures and claimed a 73-65 win over Johnson C. Smith in women’s basketball action at the Comfort Suites Classic on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians even their record at 2-2, while the Golden Bulls fall to 0-3.
Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) added 16 points and six boards. Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Quaneasia Coleman (Duluth, GA/Northview HS) collected 11 points.
Brittany Dorsett (Winston-Salem, NC) led JC Smith with 14 points. Karnina Bunch (Vicksburg, MS) tallied a dozen points with four assists, while Briya Dancer (Duncanville, TX) followed with 10 points.
Catawba trailed 26-22 following a three-pointer by Dancer at the 4:56 mark of the opening half, but the Lady Indians got a basket by McPhail and two layups by Bully to go up 28-26. Bully and Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe Co. HS) pushed the Catawba lead to 34-28. Bunch drew the Golden Bulls to within 34-30 at the break on a layup in the final seconds.
A three-pointer by Coleman gave Catawba a 39-30 edge early in the second half. JC Smith twice rallied from a double-digit deficit to claw within a point. Trailing 49-41, the Golden Bulls ran off seven straight points to close the gap to 49-48 with 11:25 left.
Bully was able to score consecutive baskets to put the Lady Indians up 53-48. That started a 16-6 run that was capped on a McPhail jumper for a 65-54 edge with 2:42 remaining. JCSU cut the margin to 69-63 inside the final 15 seconds, but Bully and Merritt each canned a pair from the line to ice the issue.
Catawba shot 44% from the field and went 17-of-20 (85%) at the line. JCSU connected on 39% from the field and made 5-of-7 at the stripe. Catawba also held a 43-34 edge on the glass.
In the opening game of the Classic, Lenoir-Rhyne posted to a 64-52 win over Barton. L-R will open play on Saturday against JC Smith at 2 p.m. Catawba will tangle with Barton at 4 p.m.
