Men's Basketball Falls on Last-Second Jumper
SALISBURY, NC -- Odell Turner (Charlotte, NC) hit a jumper in the lane with 2.6 seconds remaining to give Wingate a 64-62 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-3 and 0-1.
The basketball by Turner came after Wingate rallied from a four-point deficit in the final three minutes. Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, PA) brought the Bulldogs within 60-58 with 2:37 left. After failing to convert on one Catawba turnover, Turner made a steal and dunk to draw Wingate even with 1:50 to play.
Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) put the Indians back on top with a layup with 1:16 remaining, but Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, FL) converted a second-change basket to tie the game with 35 seconds to go. Wingate forced another turnover by Catawba and took the lead on Turner’s jumper. Catawba could not get off a last-second three-pointer before the buzzer.
Turner led Wingate with 15 points and added nine rebounds and six steals. Matilus followed with 13 points and Ryan Daye (Burlington, NC) 10 more. Martin scored a game-high 20 points for Catawba. Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) followed with 12 points with Julian Sampah (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) adding 10 points.
The largest lead for either team in the opening half was four points which Wingate enjoyed on three occasions. Catawba took a 31-30 lead at the break on Sampah’s jumper that beat the buzzer. The Indians led 51-43 following a jumper by Sampah with 9:26 remaining.
Wingate broke a two-minute scoring drought for both teams on a jumper from Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, NC) and took the lead on a layup by Matilus at 54-53 with 4:57 remaining. Catawba answered on three-pointers from Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Martin to go up 59-54 with 3:44 to play.
Both teams shot about 44% with the Indians canning 8-of-16 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs made just 8-of-18 (44%) at the line, but benefitted from 19 Catawba turnovers.
