ANDERSON, SC -- Catawba dropped another tight contest in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action, falling to host Anderson 89-86 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center.  The Trojans up their mark to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-4 and 0-2.

The loss dampened an outstanding performance by Catawba freshman guard Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS), who scored 33 points and tied a school record by canning nine three-pointers.  Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) posted a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Catawba jumped out to an 84-79 lead after the first two minutes of overtime, but Anderson scored 10 straight points to rally.  Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) had a basket and a three-pointer to help the Indians to the lead.  The Trojans took the lead at the foul line.  After a Denzail Jones layup, CJ Gleaton and Bo Holston each made two free throws to give Anderson the lead at 85-84 with 1:24 remaining.

Jones had another basket and two free throws for an 89-84 edge with nine seconds left.  Edwards hit a layup with three seconds remaining and Anderson committed a turnover to give Catawba one last chance.  Nick Houston's (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) three-pointer to tie was off the mark.

Jones shook off a tough shooting night (7-of-17) to score 21 points.  He also had six assists.  Chandler Nash led the Trojans with 24 points, while Gleaton and Holston each added a dozen.

The largest margin in a tightly contested second half was four points which Anderson held at 50-46.  The game was tied eight times in the final half.  Martin gave Catawba a 77-74 lead on three free throws with 1:26 remaining.  Nash brought the Trojans within one and a free throw by Edwards was wiped off by a lane violation with 42 seconds left.

Jones hit one of two free throws to tie the score with 33 seconds to go.  Catawba held for the final shot, but committed a turnover with six seconds remaining.  Martin blocked a last-second attempt by Anderson and the teams went to overtime.

Anderson used a 16-2 run  to go on top 29-16 at the 11 minute mark of the first half.  Edwards helped rally the Indians, canning three from behind the arc to cut the deficit to 29-28.  Edwards capped a 17-0 run on his sixth three-pointer of the half for a 33-29 Catawba lead.  He made his first seven from long range and finished the game by hitting 9-of-10 from three-point range.  The Indians led 43-38 at the break.

Catawba shot 55% for the game and went a sizzling 14-of-21 (67%) from behind the arc.  Catawba also held a 36-23 edge on the boards.  The Indians did have 23 turnovers to just 12 for Anderson and went just 10-of-17 (59%) at the line.  Martin tossed in 15 points with eight rebounds, while Reggie Perkins (Greensboro, NC/Phillips Exeter) had eight points and eight assists.

Catawba will be idle until December 15th when the Indians travel to Belmont Abbey for a 4 p.m. contest.
