Late Rally Comes Up Short for Women's Basketball in Loss to Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Pfeiffer held off a late rally by host Catawba to claim a 78-76 win in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Falcons canned 13 three-pointers in improving to 7-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-4.
Jodie Lemons (Madison, NC) led Pfeiffer with 22 points, hitting on six three-pointers. Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) added 18 points and seven rebounds. Also reaching double figures for Pfeiffer was Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA), with 14, and Bridget Rothert (Germantown, MD), with 11.
Catawba got 16 points from Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) and another 13 points along with nine rebounds from Quaneasia Coleman (Duluth, GA/Northview HS). Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) tossed in a dozen points, while Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) scored 10 points.
Pfeiffer got a trio of three-pointers from Lemons and another from Rothart over four straight possessions that helped the Falcons go up 59-53 with 7:29 left. McPhail had Catawba within a bucket at 63-61 with 2:58 to go, but Pfeiffer went on a 10-1 run to grab a 73-62 edge with 1:17 remaining.
Catawba battled back on two three-pointers by Bully and one from Coleman to cut the deficit to 77-71 with 32 seconds left. After a turnover, Catawba got a free throw from Coleman and two from Merritt to make it 77-74 with 13 seconds remaining. Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) was able to hit one of two free throws with 12 seconds left before Merritt’s layup at the buzzer accounted for the final margin.
The teams were close throughout with neither team holding more than a five point lead until Lemons’ three-pointer with 8:06 to go gave Pfeiffer a 56-50 advantage. The Falcons finished the game hitting on 13-of-33 from behind the arc. Catawba went 7-of-21, but four of those came in the final four minutes.
Catawba will play its final game before the Christmas break next Saturday at Queens with tip time set for 2 p.m.
