Women's Basketball Second Half Rally Not Enough In Loss at Queens
CHARLOTTE, NC -- Queens scored the final eight points and posted a 66-58 win over visiting Catawba in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Grady Cole Center. The Royals improve to 4-2 with the Lady Indians falling to 4-5.
The Lady Indians trailed by 17 at the break, but rallied back to go on top on Elizabeth Merritt's (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) layup at 48-47 with 7:23 left. That capped a 21-4 run by Catawba.
Merritt gave Catawba one last lead at 55-43 with three minutes to go and Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) tied the game for the Lady Indians at 58-all on a three-pointer with 1:46 remaining. Lacey Singletary got a second-chance basket with 1:28 left to give Queens the lead for good and after a Catawba miss, Shonice Pettaway made it a 62-58 Royals advantage with a minute to play.
After missed three-pointer by Catawba, Shatonya Hardy increased the lead to 64-58 on a pair of free throws and she added two more at the line with 12 seconds remaining for the final margin. Queens used a 15-1 run over the final six and half minutes of the first half to grab its 38-21 margin at the break.
Shanel Sweet led Queens with 19 points, while adding six assists, five steals and six rebounds. Hardy collected 14 points and Pettaway another 11. Merritt and Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) paced Catawba with 16 points each. Bully added five assists and six steals, while Merritt pulled down six rebounds. McPhail scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Catawba shot just 33% in the first half in falling behind. Queens shot 39% for the game with the Lady Indians ending up at 38%. The Royals out-rebounded Catawba by one and each team committed 24 turnovers.
Catawba will return from the break to host Livingstone on December 30th at 2 p.m.
