Men's Basketball Falls to Limestone 75-67
SALISBURY, NC -- Limestone got a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds from Joe Raga (Lithia, FL) and defeated host Catawba 75-67 in men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Saints improve to 7-2, while the Catawba Indians drop their fifth straight in falling to 3-6.
The Saints placed four players in double figures. Mike Barrett (Virginia Beach, VA) followed Raga with 13 points, while Charles Blue (Corpus Christi, TX) and Josh Corry (Gaffney< SC) each tossed in 11.
Catawba also had four double digit scorers, led by Elon Edwards’ (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) 19, while Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Julian Sampah (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) added 14 points and Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) scored 10 points.
Limestone led most of the contest, taking the lead for good at 25-24 on a three-pointer by Corry with 7:31 left in the opening half. Catawba had taken a 22-17 lead after a three-pointer by Edwards and a basket by Sampah. Limestone went on a 10-2 run to go on top.
The Saints built a 10-point lead at 53-43 early in the second half, but Catawba rallied with seven straight points to cut the margin to 53-50 with 12:21 left. Blue helped push the lead back to 62-53 before the Indians again rallied, cutting the lead to 66-64 following a three-point play by Sampah at the 4:49 mark.
Blue then scored four points and Barrett added a basket as Limestone grabbed a 72-64 lead with 50 seconds left. Sampah hit one three-pointer for Catawba, but misfired after a turnover and the Saints canned 3-of-4 at the line in the final 18 seconds for the final margin.
Catawba shot just 39% for the game and were out-rebounding 43-30. Limestone also did better at the line, making 17-of-23 (74%) to 56% (10-of-18) for the Indians. The rebounding and free throw edge helped the Saints offset a 20-13 deficit in turnovers. Limestone shot 49%.
Catawba will return to action on December 30, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a 2 p.m. contest.
