Men's Basketball Upended by UNC Pembroke
PEMBROKE, NC -- UNC Pembroke shot 51% from the field and claimed a 77-58 win over visiting Catawba in men’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Jones Center. The Braves improve to 8-4, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-7, losing for the sixth straight time.
George Blakeney scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace UNC Pembroke. Shahmel Bracket added 17 points and Quamain Rose tallied 11 points with four steals. Catawba got 13 points and seven boards from freshman Julian Sampah (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) and 10 points from red-shirt freshman Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS). Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) tallied nine points with seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
UNCP pulled away late in the first half. Leading only 20-17 with 10:45 to go before the break, the Braves put together 17-3 run to go on top 37-20 with just over four minutes left in the half. UNC Pembroke took that 17-point edge to the break, leading 44-27. The Braves shot 56% in the opening half and held a 21-10 edge on the glass.
The Braves surged again to start the second half, going up 56-31 with 12:39 to play. UNCP would eventually lead by as many as 30 points.
UNC Pembroke canned 31-of-61 (51%) for the game and held a 43-30 rebounding edge. Catawba shot just 38% (20-of-53).
Catawba will be idle until January 9 when the Indians return to league play, hosting Brevard at 8 p.m.
