May's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball Over Livingstone
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Taylor May (China Grove, NC/S. Rowan HS) posted her first career double-double to lead host Catawba to a 76-54 win over Livingstone in women’s basketball action on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 5-5. The Lady Blue Bears fall to 4-5.
May tallied 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lady Indians. Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) followed with 14 points, while Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) had eight points and 11 rebounds. Cierra York (Winston-Salem, NC) led Livingstone with a dozen points. Ashley Walker (Washington, DC) scored 10 points and Tiffany Evans (Durham, NC) grabbed 10 rebounds.
It took three minutes for either team to score with Livingstone taking a 2-0 lead at the 16:45 mark of the opening half. Merritt got Catawba on the board with a pair of free throws at the 16:54 mark and the Lady Indians took the lead for good on McPhail’s jumper five minutes into the half.
May took over, scoring three straight baskets as Catawba stated to pull away. Three more baskets by May upped the lead to 19-7 and the Lady Indians went up 31-9 on two free throws by Merritt with 4:22 to go in the half. Catawba led 41-21 at the break as Livingstone shot just 21%.
Catawba never led Livingstone back in the contest, moving out 63-33 on a layup by Emma Ucinski (Atlanta, GA/St. Pius X) with 8:40 remaining. Livingstone could manage only 29% shooting (19-of-67) in the loss, while Catawba canned 41% (27-of-66) layup at 48-47 with 7:23 left. The Lady Indians also controlled the glass by a 55-43 margin.
Catawba will return to action on January 9 as they host Brevard in a league contest at 6 p.m.
