Women's Basketball Pulls Away From Brevard to Take 64-46 Win
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba pulled away in the second half and posted a 64-46 win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 3-8 and 1-2.
With the game tied at 34-all, Catawba scored eight straight points, capped by a three-pointer from Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) to go up 42-34 at the 11:42 mark. A 10 point run followed as the Lady Indians stretched their lead to 56-40 with 3:54 left to put the game away.
Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) led Catawba with 19 points, while McPhail added 15 points and nine rebounds. Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) also reached double figures with 10 points and nine rebounds. Tuccoa Brackett (Marion, NC) led Brevard with 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Micheala Watkins (Forest City, NC) added 11 points.
The teams played a tight first half with the largest margin just five points. Brevard hit three-pointers on their first three possessions to lead 9-7. The Tornados went cold after that and Catawba pulled out to a 26-24 lead at the break. Brevard held their last lead at the 17:15 mark following a free throw by Watkins for a 34-33 edge. Catawba then began to take control.
Catawba shot 48% (24-of-50) for the contest, while Brevard canned just 32% (18-of-57). The Lady Indians also controlled the glass 42-27 to help offset an 18-12 disadvantage in turnovers.
Catawba is back at home again on Saturday afternoon, hosting Tusculum at 2 p.m.
