Men's Basketball Falls Short of Epic Rally
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba closed a 24-point second-half deficit to three, but could get no closer as the visiting Pioneers took a 68-63 decision in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Pioneers improve to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-8 and 1-3.
Catawba hit on just four of its first 24 shots and missed its first 11 three-point tries in digging a 44-20 hole with 13:32 left. Lee Martin,(Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave), who posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, finally connected from long range for the Indians to make it 44-23 with 12:59 to go.
The Indians got the deficit under 20 on two free throws by Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) with 11:49 remaining and after Martin sank two three-pointers sandwiched around a layup by Edwards, Catawba was within 47-37 with 8:22 left. A jumper and two free throws from Addison Flynn (Fayetteville, GA) pushed the TC lead back to 11, but Catawba had one last rally.
Trailing by nine with 53 second to play, Martin hit two free throws and Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, LITHUANIA/North Hills Christian) scored on a follow shot to cut the margin to 62-57 with 31 seconds left. Martin canned two more at the line to reduce the deficit to 63-59. The Pioneers made three-of-four at the line to offset two layups by Edwards to keep TC up 66-63 with three seconds remaining. Flynn iced the game with two from the line with a second to play.
Flynn had a monster game for the Pioneers, scoring a career-high 32 points and setting a school record with 19 made free throws. He was 6-of-16 from the field and 19-of-22 at the stripe. Devin Call (Winchester, VA) chipped in with 13 points. After shooting 48% in the first half, the Pioneers went just 5-of-22 (23%) in the second half to aid in the Catawba comeback.
Catawba hit on 7-of-32 (22%) in the first half and finished the game at just 31% (20-of-65). The Indians were a mere 4-of-234 (17%) from behind the arc. Edwards followed Martin with 16 points and handed out six assists. Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Catawba travels to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday with tip time around 8 p.m.
