Women's Basketball falls by a point at PfeifferSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College fell to host Pfeiffer 67-66 in women’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Merner Gym. Pfeiffer used a 12-2 run to close the game to take the win and improve to 2-1. Catawba falls to 1-2. Catawba held a 64-55 lead with 4:27 play following a three-pointer by Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX), but the Lady Indians would hit on ly one of last four shots, miss two free throws and commit two turnovers as Pfeiffer rallied. Shannon Reid (Granite Fall, NC) and Amie Williams (Charlotte, NC) hit three-pointers to put the Falcons within 64-61, then a jumper by Amanda Joplin (Hudson, NC) and two free throws by Bertshalyn Bailey (Tulsa, OK) gave Pfeiffer a 65-64 lead with 1:02 remaining. Catawba’s Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) missed a pair of free throws with 44 seconds left and after a foul on the rebound, Joplin hit two free throws to give Pfeiffer a 67-64 lead. Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) cut the deficit to a point on a layin with 32 seconds left, but after holding Pfeiffer to a shot clock violation, the Lady Indians failed to get off a final shot. Catawba scored the game’s first six points, but trailed most of the opening half. Pfeiffer canned 56% of its first half shots and went 5-of-8 from three-point range to lead 37-33 at the break. Catawba went on a 9-2 run to open the second half and though the game was tied three times, Pfeiffer did not retake the lead until 1:02 remained. Catawba got two second-chance baskets from Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA) and a layin by Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) to take a 61-54 lead with 6:14 to play. Darden led Catawba with 15 points, while Locklear had 13 and Carmon 10. Reid had 18 points to pace Pfeiffer, while Joplin added 11 points. #####
