Women's Basketball rallies past ECSU

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College completed a perfect weekend in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym, defeating Elizabeth City State 69-62. The Lady Indians improve to 3-2 on the year, while ECSU fall to 3-2. Catawba battled back from a seven-point second half deficit to top the Lady Vikings. Catawba trailed 34-27 with 16:48 remaining and used a an 8-0 run to take its first lead since the opening minutes at the 13:42 mark on a jumper by Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC). ECSU got the lead back after consecutive three-pointers by Shaneka Ellis (Zebulon, NC) to go up 40-38 with 12:25 remaining. The Lady Indians battled back on a put-back by Julie Kaufman (Damascus, MD) and a three-pointer by Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA) to lead 47-46 at the 7:10 mark. Catawba had missed on its 14 three-point shots before the make by Carmon. Kaufman had a second put-back at the 6:40 mark put Catawba ahead to stay at 49-48. Catawba hit on 12-of-17 free throws in the final 4:02 to stay in front. ECSU fell behind by eight, but got within 64-62 on a pair of free throws by Trevia Pittman (Rocky Mount, NC) with 28 seconds left. Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) hit on four free throws and Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) added another to hold off the Lady Vikings. Elizabeth City did most of its damage from long rang, connecting on 9-of-24 for the game. The Lady Vikings enjoyed a 38-30 edge on the boards, but suffered 24 turnovers to just 14 for Catawba. Ellis had 15 points to lead ECSU, while Pittman added 14. Darden scored 13 to place Catawba, while Locklear added 11 points and eight rebounds.
