Phipps' hot hand leads Men's Basketball to win at St. Augustine'sRALEIGH, NC -- Catawba College outscored host St. Augustine’s 105-101 in men’s basketball action on Saturday night at Emery Gym. Junior Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA) scored a career-high 26 points to pace the Tribe, who improve to 2-1 on the year. St. Augustine’s falls to 2-1. Catawba returns to action on Monday night as they host ninth-ranked Shaw University at 7 p.m. Catawba built as much as an 18-point lead in the opening half, but needed to rally in the final four minutes to gain the win. A three-point play by Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) gave the Tribe a 47-29 lead with 4:33 left in the half, but St. Augustine’s began to rally and were within 42-43 by the half. Catawba still led by a dozen at 87-75 with 7:35 to go until the Falcons went on a 19-3 run to take a 94-90 lead with 4:32 left. Carter would deliver another three-point play to cut the margin to 94-93 and a three-pointer by Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) gave the Tribe a 96-94 lead at the 3:32 mark. Jay Chapman hit consecutive jumpers for St. Augustine’s to give the Falcons a 98-97 lead with 2:54 to play. After a Phipps laying, Chapman again put the Falcons on top, this time at 100-99 with 2:27 remaining. Petty would hit a pair of free throws with 1:24 to go for a 101-100 Catawba lead, while Patrick Pope made one of two for the Falcons to leave the game tied at 101-101 with 1:04 left. Carter would connect on a three-pointer with 48 seconds to play and St. Augustine’s missed on a pair of shots before JarMark Parker (Greensboro, NC) made a free throw to seal the win with 28 seconds left. Catawba connected on 50% of its first half shots, including 6-of-12 three pointers to grab at 52-43 lead at the break. The Falcons also held a hot hand, hitting on 58% of its attempts. Catawba would heat up even more in the final stanza, canning 18-of-28 shots (64%). Carter followed Phipps with 25 points and added eight rebounds. Petty and Alex Luyk (Madrid, SPAIN) each tallied 18 for the victors. The Tribe made a dozen three-pointers in 20 tries on the night, getting a 6-of-7 performance from Phipps from long range. Kevin Smith had 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Falcons. #####
