Women's Basketball Snaps Skid With Win Over Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC --- Catawba built a 25-point lead and went on to defeat visiting Mars Hill 69-62 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 3-12 and 0-7.
Catawba got 17 points Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) and a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds by Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, SC/Darlington HS/Paine) in snapping a two-game losing streak. Taylor May (China Grove, NC/S. Rowan HS) and Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) each had 10 points with Bully handing out six assists.
Mars Hill was led by Armeka Booker (Oak Ridge, TN), who scored a game-high 23 points and added nine rebounds. Ansley Ricker (Greeneville, TN) followed with 17 points and Cadence Wilmoth (Glade Spring, VA) added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Catawba pulled away in the last part of the first half. Leading 21-18, Catawba went on a 12-2 run, which included a pair of three-pointers from Mallary Clay (Lansing, NC/Ashe Co. HS) to grab a 33-20 advantage. The Lady Indians scored the first 10 points of the second half to increase a 39-27 edge to 49-27 with 14:27 to play.
Mars Hill trailed 58-33 with just over nine minutes left when the Lady Lions began to whittle away at their deficit. A three-pointer from Kristen Metcalf (Black Mountain, NC) with 4:54 remaining brought the Lions within a dozen at 62-0 and a layup by Booker cut the margin to 66-58 with 52 seconds left. Catawba was able to go 3-of-6 at the line from there to hold on for the win.
Catawba shot 44% for the game and held a 44-34 edge on the glass. Mars Hill made 40% of its shots, but went only 2-of-14 from behind the arc.
Catawba travels to Carson-Newman this Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
