Little and Martin Post Double-Doubles as Men's Basketball Tops Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC -- Host Catawba placed five players in double figures in cruising to an 81-64 win over Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians put an end to a three-game losing streak, improving to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 3-12 and 0-7.
Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) led Catawba with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Reggie Perkins (Greensboro, NC/Phillips Exeter HS) followed with 15 points with Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) scoring 12 points and Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, LITHUANIA/North Hills Christian) reached a career-high 11 points.
Khouraichi Thiam (Dakar, SENEGAL) led Mars Hill with a double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Kacey Holt (Hercules, CA) came off the bench to score 15 points and Jalen Witherspoon (Monroe, NC) chipped in with 10 points.
Catawba never trailed and used a 12-2 run, capped by consecutive three-pointers by Martin, to go up by double digits after seven minutes at 19-8. The Indians increased their margin to 18 in the opening half and took a 39-22 lead at the break. Mars Hill got within 13 early in the second half, but Catawba put the game away with an 18-5 run over a six minute span to lead 60-34 with 11:24 left.
Catawba canned 49% from the floor and went 9-of-21 (43%) from long range. The Lions made just 33% and was 3-of-12 from behind the arc. The Indians held a 41-36 edge on the boards.
The Indians will travel to Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
