Women's Basketball Gets Road Win at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Senior Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) scored 25 points to help Catawba to a 66-58 win over host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The Catawba Indians grab their first league road win over the season in improving to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. The Lady Eagles fall to 10-5 and 4-4.
The Lady Indians also got 17 points from Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) and 13 from Quaneasia Coleman (Duluth, GA/Northview HS) in the win. Merritt added seven rebounds and three steals, while Bully handed out four assists and collected four steals. Shyra Clark led C-N with 13 points.
Catawba held a five-point lead late in the first half, but just as a week ago let its advantage slip to fall behind 28-24 at the break. Each team traded runs to open the second half. Catawba went on a 16-2 run to start the half to go up 40-30 with 14:35 to go. A three-pointer by Bully had put the Lady Indians on top at 29-28 and Coleman capped the run on a three-point play.
Carson-Newman answered, rallying for a 47-45 edge on the heels of a 13-2 run that was capped by a layup by Whitney Moody with 8:55 remaining. Merritt tied the game with a pair of free throws then Bully put Catawba up for good on a layup at the 6:57 mark.
Lady Eagle coach Mike Mincey was hit with a technical foul with 3:35 to go and Merritt canned a pair of free throws to stretch the Catawba lead to 54-47. A three-point by Clark with 2:30 remaining pulled Carson-Newman within 56-52, but the Lady Indians went a perfect 8-for-8 at the line in the final two minutes to secure the victory.
Catawba canned 22-of-53 (42%) from the field, including making 44% (12-of-27) in the second half. After making only 2-of-8 at the line in the opening half, Catawba made 17-of-20 in the final stanza. Carson-Newman held a 40-36 edge on the boards, but shot just 34% for the game. Each team committed 23 turnovers.
Catawba will face another road test on Wednesday as the Lady Indians travel to Wingate for a 6 p.m. tip-off. Catawba won the first meeting this year between the teams, 68-60 at Goodman Gym back in November.
