Men's Basketball Falls at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Carson-Newman built a 20-point first half lead and held off visiting Catawba to claim a 76-65 win in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The Eagles improve to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 5-11 and 2-6.
Antoine Davis scored 23 points, hitting on five three-pointers, to pace Carson-Newman. Ishmael Sanders canned a trio of three-pointers en route to 18 points with Carson Brooks chipping in with 10 points. Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead Catawba. Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) had 16 points on four three-pointers and Chris Watson (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS/Rockingham CC) accounted for 10 points and eight boards.
Carson-Newman jumped out to a 10-2 lead then used a 20-4 run to go on top 32-12 with just over six minutes left in the first half. Martin had two three-pointer and Watson added four points to help rally the Indians within nine late in the half before the Eagles took a 37-25 lead at the break.
Consecutive three-pointers by Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) and a basket by Watson helped pull the Indians to within five at 41-36 with 14:42 left. The Eagles went back up by 10, but again Catawba closed in on a three-pointer by Reggie Perkins (Greensboro, NC/Phillips Exeter HS) and two baskets by Julian Sampah (Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) to cut the margin to 48-45 with 11:50 remaining.
The Eagles responded with a 16-4 run over the next six minutes to go up by 15 only to see Catawba come back to cut the margin to 69-65 with a minute to play. Carson-Newman was able to connect on 5-of-6 at the line in the final 44 seconds to hold off the Indian rally.
The Indians travel to Wingate on Wednesday to tangle with the league-leading Bulldogs at 8 p.m. Wingate won the initial meeting 64-62 on a last second jumper back in November.
