Men's Basketball Can't Overcome Early Hole
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate scored the first 10 points and cruised to a 78-68 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 12-5 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-12 and 2-7.
Deion Turman scored 19 points to lead the Bulldogs, who shot 58% in the opening half to build a 43-22 edge at the break. Jeff Parker had 14 points off the bench, while Ryan Daye added 13 points and Odell Turner a dozen. The Bulldogs also enjoyed a 39-30 edge on the boards with Turner grabbing eight, while also dishing out six assists.
Catawba was led by Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS), who posted a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) tossed in 12 points with Vismantas Marijosius (Kedainiai, LITHUANIA/North Hills) scored 10 points. Little also blocked five shots.
The Indians shot just 30% in the first half, but clawed back within 13 at 50-37 with 14 minutes to play. Wingate responded with an 8-0 run to regain its 20-poin edge and went on to grab a 78-50 edge with 5:38 left. The Bulldogs would not score again from there, but Wingate had built enough cushion to take the win.
Catawba shot 67% (18-of-27) in the second half, but its cold first half put the Tribe in too big of a hole to recover. Wingate canned 7-of-12 (58%) from behind the arc.
The Indians return home on Saturday to host #10 Lincoln Memorial at 4 p.m.
