Edwards' 27 Points Helps Men's Basketball Stun #10 Lincoln Memorial
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got 27 points from freshman Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) as the Indians upset #10 Lincoln Memorial 73-63 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-12 overall and 3-7 in the SAC, while the league-leading Railsplitters fall to 15-3 and 8-2.
The Indians scored the first six points and led much of the opening half. LMU rallied behind long-range shooting to grab a 19-18 lead with 8:38 left in the half on a three-pointer by Tim Pierce (Albany, GA). Catawba regained the lead late in the half, but Lorenza Ross (Savannah, GA) beat the buzzer of the half with another three-pointer for a 31-30 LMU lead at the break.
The Railsplitters were 11-of-24 (46%) from the field in the first half, but a sizzling 7-of-9 (78%) from behind the arc. Edwards paced Catawba with 16 of his game-high total in the opening stanza.
Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) gave Catawba a lead just over a minute into the second half and the Indians led the rest of the way. Little capped a 8-0 run with a dunk to give Catawba a 49-39 lead with 10:11 to go.
Ross got the Railsplitters within a bucket at 64-62 after his fourth three-pointer of the game with 1:29 left, but Catawba was solid at the line down the stretch. Edwards answered with a pair of free throws at the 1:13 mark and added two more after a LMU point for a 68-63 lead with 34 seconds remaining.
LMU unraveled in the final seconds. Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) was able to rebound his own missed free throw attempt with 17 seconds left and hit a pair from the line. After a LMU turnover on the inbounds play, Little sank two from the stripe to cap the win.
Edwards canned 11-of-18 shots, hitting his lone three-point attempt and adding four free throws. He played all 40 minutes, adding a pair of assists with no turnovers and a steal. Little and Martin just missed double-doubles. Little posted 21 points and nine boards, while Martin added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Lincoln Memorial was led by Ross’ 18 points. Chance Jones (Knoxville, TN) followed with 15 points, while Pierce added 13. Leading scorer Jake Troyli (Largo, FL), who averaged 15 points a game, was held scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting.
LMU held a 39-32 edge on the glass, but had 19 turnovers to just six for Catawba. The six miscues by Catawba were more than 10 fewer than its season average. Catawba hit on half its shots in the second half to finish at 48% for the game. LMU shot 40%, but remained solid from long range, hitting on 11-of-19 from behind the arc. Catawba went 4-of-7 from three-point range.
