CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba claimed a win in its softball opener 10-8 over host Queens on Thursday afternoon at Park Road Park. The second game of the doubleheader was rained out. The Catawba Indians are 1-0, while the Royals fall to 1-4.
The Lady Indians trailed 3-0 after an inning, but tied the contest in the fourth on a two-run homer by Kimberly Fesperman (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS). Catawba benefited from a Queens error and took the lead later in the frame on a two-out, two-run double by Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS).
Queens went back on top in its half of the fourth, going up 6-5 on a two-run homer by Megan Lathbury. The lead was short-lived as Catawba plated five runs in the fifth. The Lady Indians capitalized on a two-out error, getting back-to-back RBI double from Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) and Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) to lead 8-6. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) and Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NY/Madison HS) added RBI singles for a 10-6 edge.
The Royals got a run back in the fifth on a bases loaded walk and another run in the sixth on a wild pitch. Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) walked the first two batters she faced in the sixth, but struck out Emily Poulton to end the frame with the tying runs on base. Tysinger struck out the side in the seventh around one hit to earn the save.
Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/E. Forsyth HS) got the win in relief for the Lady Indians. She entered in the first inning and allowed five runs (four earned) off seven hits. She walked four and fanned four. Eight players took part in a 13-hit Catawba attack. Gibbs, Hyder, Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) and Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian/N. Greenville) all had two hits. Fesperman and Hyder had two RBI.
