Baseball Rolls Past Barton Behind Lomascolo's 12 K's
ASHEBORO, NC -- Catawba pitching sent Barton to the pound on Friday afternoon as the NCAA II sixth-ranked Indians topped the Bulldogs 8-1 at McCrary Park in the opening game of the Pfeiffer Tournament. Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) paced Catawba with twelve strikeouts in seven innings as he upped his record to 2-0. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-2.
Catawba drew first blood when Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/South Rowan HS) and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) crossed the plate in the first inning after being put on base with consecutive walks. A fly ball to right center by Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodbury Forest HS/Georgia Tech) advanced Houston to third then Satterfield stole second. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) scored Houston with a ground out to third base and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) brought in Satterfield from second with a single to left field.
Catawba chased Barton starter Christian Oliver with a big second inning that started with none on and two out. Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.), who walked, scored on a wild pitch and Dula brought in a run with a walk. Zubillaga doubled home two runs and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) capped the frame as he plated a run on an infield single.
Each team scored a run in the sixth. Barton’s Collins Cuthrell led off with a double and came around to score on a one-out single by Zac Crumpler. Catawba would respond in the bottom half of the inning when the Bulldogs gave up three more walks, including one with the bases loaded to Zubillaga to bring in Satterfield.
Barton would add one more in the ninth off Catawba’s Tyler Britton (Jamestown, NC/High Point Christian HS) but the deficit was too much. Lomascolo went seven innings and allowed one run off six hits. Sean Grant (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) and Britton split the final two innings to finish off the Bulldogs.
Zubillaga had a pair of hits and collected four RBI for Catawba. Houston also had a pair of hits and scored twice.
Barton staffed six pitchers in the contest with Oliver taking the loss. Ches Lamm, Duncan Everett, Mitchell Frazier, Zach Beachem, and Will Flynn also took the mound in the game. As a team the Bulldog pitching staff gave up eight runs on eight hits and ten walks.
Catawba will be back in action Saturday at 11 a.m. against host Pfeiffer. The Indians defeated Pfeiffer twice last weekend at Catawba’s Newman Park with scores of 7-0 and 8-1, respectively. Catawba will also face Barton once again at 2 p.m.
