Women's Basketball Overwhelms Anderson
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba put four starters in double figures and rolled to a 68-44 win over visiting Anderson in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 11-9 overall and 7-5 in the SAC, while the Trojans fall to 15-7 and 9-3.
Antoinette McPhail (Timmonsville, NC/Darlington HS/Paine) led all scorers with 17 points for Catawba and also grabbed eight rebounds. Taylor May (China Grove, NC/S. Rowan HS) tossed in 15 points with six rebounds, while Elizabeth Merritt (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) and Chloe Bully (Hannut, BELGIUM/KOL Landen) each added 11 points. Merritt tallied nine rebounds and handed our five assists.
Lesley Woods paced Anderson with 14 points, hitting on 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Sierra Simpson collected 11 points for the Trojans, who shot just 32% (16-of-50).
The Lady Indians stormed out of the gate, scoring the first nine points and went up by double digits at 13-2 less than five minutes into the contest. Catawba didn't stop, zooming to a 34-6 bulge with four minutes remaining in the half. Woods hit three of her long-range baskets in the final 3:42 to get Anderson within 37-19 at the break.
Catawba put its stamp on the convincing win early in the second half, going on a 21-5 run that saw the Lady Indians grab a 58-26 lead with 11:24 to play. Catawba shot nearly 47% for the game, held a 36-31 edge on the glass and committed seven less turnovers than the Trojans. Quaneasia Coleman (Duluth, GA/Northview HS) handed out eight assists in the win for the Lady Indians.
Catawba will host Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday night in a 6 p.m. contest.
