Baseball Cranks Five Homers in Two Wins on Saturday
ASHEBORO, NC -- Bats were alive Saturday morning as NCAA II sixth ranked Catawba took down Pfeiffer 8-4 and Barton 9-7 at McCrary Park during the Pfeiffer Tournament. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) led the Indian offense with three homers over the two games. The Catawba Indians improve to 7-0, while the Falcons fall to 0-5 and Bulldogs drop to 1-3, respectively.
In the first game against Pfeiffer, Dula put Catawba on the board first with a solo shot over the left field wall in the second inning. Pfeiffer would respond in the bottom half after two errors helped load the bases. A balk by John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown) plated one run and the Falcons took the lead on a fielder's choice by Aarin Sharpe. Tuttle got out of further damage, ending the inning with one of his three strikeouts of the game.
In the fourth, Dula would tie the game with his second homer of the game. Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) would score another run for Catawba in the fifth after getting on with a walk. He stole second and third and scored on Ethan Satterfield's (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) infield single.
Catawba would add two more in the sixth on a two-run homer by Danny Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS). Pfeiffer closed to within 5-3 in the seventh before Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) would bring two more in the top of the eighth with a homerun down the left field line. Parisi added another RBI in the ninth on an infield single to score Dula.
Both Tuttle’s would take the decision as Catawba’s John Tuttle improved to 2-0, while Bryan Tuttle falls to 0-2 on the season. John Tuttle pitched six and a third innings in the win giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits.
In the second game, Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) broke a 7-7 tie in the eighth inning with a one-out, pinch-hit RBI single that scored Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS), who had led off with a double. The Indians added an insurance run when Mario Parisi’s (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS) sacrifice fly to center was dropped.
Brooks worked a perfect ninth, striking out two to earn his third save. Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) collected the win. He went seven innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) off nine hits, but fanned 10. Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) tossed a scoreless eighth to set up the save for Brooks.
Catawba jumped out in front with a three-run first. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) doubled home Satterfield. Dula brought in a run on a bases-loaded walk and Brooks hit a sacrifice fly. A Zubillaga RBI double and a two-run homer from Dula made it 6-0 in the third.
Barton got back in the game as JT Virant connected on a two-run homer in the third and Seth Breasseale doubled home two in the fourth to make the score 7-5. In the seventh, Phillip Williams singled home a run and Dillon Rudio scored on an errant throw after a failed pickoff to tied the score and set up the late game heroics by the Indians.
Dula had four hits, three of those homers, and accounted for five RBI in the two games. Satterfield had five hits.
Catawba will face Pfeiffer in the final game of the tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m.
