Softball Splits Doubleheader With Mount Olive

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split two softball games against Mount Olive Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians took the first game 4-0, while Mount Olive responded to win game two 6-3.  Catawba now stands at 3-2 on the season.  The Trojans are 5-3.

In game one the Lady Indians jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) doubled down the left field line to bring in Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Sr. HS) and Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS).

Later, in the sixth, Kim Fesperman (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS) would add some insurance runs for Catawba with a double of her own to left field that would bring in Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian HS/N. Greenville) and Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanley HS).

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) picked up her second win of the season, pitching a complete game shutout.  She allowed only one hit and struck out nine.

Mount Olive got a big momentum swing in the top of the fourth in game two as Beth Overman’s grand slam off Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanley HS) put the Trojans up 6-3.  Emily B. Huneycutt took the mound in relief from starter Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/E. Forsyth HS) in the first inning with one out, a run and the bases loaded.

Catawba overcame an early 2-0 deficit.  Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) pulled the Lady Indians even in the first with a solo home run.  The homer brings Gibbs within seven homeruns of tying the Catawba career mark of 43.  The Lady Indians took the lead later in the inning when Hyder scored on an error.

Hyder had three hits in game two for Catawba and finished the day 4-for-6, including a double, a walk and two runs batted in.  Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS) had two hits in the nightcap and three on the day.  She had a RBI and a double for Catawba in game two.

Overman, Danielle Mitchell, Katie Moore and Lauren McGrath all had two hits for Mount Olive in the second game.  Madison Johnston got the win, pitching six shutout innings in relief.  Moore had the lone hit for the Trojans in game one.

Tysinger, who pitched three and a third scoreless innings of relief in game two, finished the day with a total of 10.1 innings pitched giving up just three hits and striking out 14.  Emily B. Huneycutt would take the loss for Catawba in game two.

The Lady Indians return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Pfeiffer with games starting at 1:30 p.m.
