ROCK HILL, SC -- Following the first full week of the 2013 SAC baseball season, Catawba first baseman Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) and Carson-Newman starting pitcher Chris Armstrong have been selected as the conference’s weekly award winners. It was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Dula, the SAC Player of the Week, led Catawba to a perfect 4-0 record at the Asheboro Tournament, which vaulted the Indians to No. 3 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll. The junior hit an even .500 on the week with three home runs, a double and eight RBI. He also recorded three walks, getting on base at a .625 clip.
Dula’s biggest game of the week came on Saturday in an 8-4 win over Pfeiffer, where he went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three runs scored. His three home runs in 2013 are tied for the most in the SAC and his 10 RBI are tied for the second most.
Armstrong earned SAC Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing 6.1 scoreless innings in an 8-0 Carson-Newman victory over fifth-ranked USC Aiken on Friday.
Armstrong allowed just three hits and two walks in the game while striking out four to earn the win. Only one of the USC Aiken hits went for extra bases. The senior has a 2.53 ERA and eight strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched so far this season.
