Lomascolo Out-Duels Wingate in Baseball's SAC Opener
SALISBURY, NC – Junior Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) drove in the lone run as third-ranked Catawba claimed a 1-0 win over visiting Wingate in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Newman Park on Friday night. The Catawba Indians improve to 9-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC with the victory, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-5 and 0-1.
The Indians won the pitcher's duel between Catawba's Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) and Wingate's Ben Currie (Clemmons, NC) in which both starters posted double digits in strikeouts. Lomascolo improved to 3-0 as he went seven and two-thirds innings allowing just four hits with 10 strikeouts. Currie pitched seven innings, surrendering the lone run off eight hits while fanning 11.
Wingate started the game with a leadoff triple from Thomas Spitz (West Chester, PA), but he Bulldogs failed to get him home. Catawba would leave a pair of runs in scoring position in its first after a pair of leadoff hits. Both pitchers would rally to strike out the side to get out of trouble.
The Bulldogs again got a runner to third with no outs, this time in the sixth. Brian Yeung (Raleigh, NC) led off with a walk and went to third on a single by Spitz. Lomascolo would keep Wingate off the scoreboard with a strikeout and a double play.
Catawba finally broke through in the sixth. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS), who had three hits, led off with a single and went to second on a fly out. He scored on a two-out double by Zubillaga that got over the head of Wingate right fielder Eric Serra (Miami, FL), who slipped as he broke back on the ball.
Lomascolo, Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS), who struck out Spitz to end the eighth, and John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS) made the single run hold up. Tuttle allowed a leadoff single to Serra and a one-out hit to Josh Clark (Clemmons, NC) to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout and a walk to load the bases, he retired Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, SC) on a fly out to right field to nab his first save.
Catawba got the three hits from Satterfield and two each from Zubillaga and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) in a 10-hit attack. Clark and Spitz each had two hits for the Bulldogs, who had six on the night.
The teams will complete the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
