Tysinger and Gerone Key Softball's Split With #21 WV Wesleyan

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba split a softball doubleheader with 21st-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba won the opener 4-0 before the Bobcats claimed a 2-1 win in the nightcap that was stopped in the top of the seventh due to snow.  The Lady Indians go to 5-4 on the season, while WV Wesleyan is 3-1.

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) tossed her third straight one-hit shutout in the opening win for the Lady Indians.  The freshman flirted with a no-hitter until Paige Cummings broke up the bid with a leadoff single in the seventh.  Tysinger ran her scoreless innings streak to 26 and has allowed just eight hits over 33 innings of work this year.

Catawba scored the only runs Tysinger would need in the first.  With two outs, Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) doubled and scored on a single by Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS).  Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS) followed with a two-run homer and a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Indians tacked on a run in the sixth on sacrifice fly from Tysinger.  Gerone paced Catawba with three hits, while Hyder and Gibbs each had two.  Tysinger allowed just the one hit, walked one, hit one and fanned nine.

In game two, the Bobcats took the early lead.  Cummings doubled with two outs and WVW survived a third out when Megan Malenstyn reached on a wild pitch after striking out.  Kaitlyn Carey brought home the run when she followed with an infield single.

West Virginia Wesleyan added an unearned run in the fourth before Catawba tried to rally in the sixth.  Tysinger was hit by a pitch and Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) doubled her home with one out.  Kovalcin got to third on a Hyder bunt, but Gibbs fouled out to end the frame.  The game as stopped briefly then resumed, but the snows became to heavy to finish the final inning.

The Bobcats had only three hits off Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/E. Forsyth HS), but it was enough support for Carey, who surrendered just a run on two hits.  Gerone had the other hit for Catawba.

The Lady Indians travel to UNC Pembroke on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
