Men's Lacrosse Opens Season With Win Over Coker
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba opened its men's lacrosse season with a 15-9 victory over visiting Coker on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Matt Symes (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Centennial HS) and John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) each had four goals to help the Catawba Indians start 1-0. The Cobras fall to 1-1.
Catawba never trailed, scoring the first three goals. Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg) got the opening goal at the 12:34 mark and Catawba got two goals in 14 seconds for the 3-0 lead with 6:43 to go in the first quarter. Coker twice pulled within a goal, but tallies from Symes and Ridolfo in the final two minutes of the half to give Catawba a 7-4 edge at the break.
Symes scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half as the Indians pushed their advantage to 10-4. Catawba would go up 15-6 late in the fourth before three goals from the Cobras in the final four minutes closed the gap to six by the final whistle.
Scheich added two assists to his four goals, while Symes also had a helper. Ridolfo and Gage Mason (Apex, MC/Apex HS) each scored a pair of goals. Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, MD/Bel Air HS) won 13 of 14 face-offs and collected 10 ground balls. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) recorded 15 saves.
Mike Martiello scored three goals for Coker. Keith LaClair had two goals and two assists. Josh Masciarelli totaled 18 saves.
Catawba held a 5-35 edge in shots and grabbed 49 ground balls to 44 for the Cobras. The Indians won 17 of 27 face-offs.
The Indians will next host Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
