Men's Basketball Can't Find Shooting Touch in Loss at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, TN -- Catawba suffered through a cold shooting afternoon in falling to host Tusculum 72-52 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday at Pioneer Arena.  The Pioneers improve to 6-16 overall and 4-10 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 7-15 and 4-10.

Matt Shown had a double-double of 10 points and 19 rebounds and was one of four Tusculum College players in double figures in the win.  Darius Carter finished with a season-high 19 points and five steals to lead the Pioneers, who also received 14 points and seven rebounds from Neal Spinks and 12 points and a career-best six assists from Addison Flynn.

While Catawba made just 35% (22-of-63), Tusculum shot a season-best 52.7% (29-for-55) from the field in the victory.  The Pioneers hit on 57% (16-for-28) in the second half, outscoring Catawba 40-26 after the break to snap a three-game losing streak.

Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) paced the Indians with 19 points, while Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Catawba went just 4-for-21 from three-point range.

Catawba scored the first eight points after five minutes of action, but a putback by Shown sparked a 16-3 run that saw the Pioneers take a 16-11 lead on a layup by Keith Jumper with 9:41 to go in the first half.  Back-to-back layups by Carter gave the Pioneers a 25-20 advantage with 5:16 left in the first half, and Spinks closed out the half with two field goals to send the Pioneers to the locker room with a 32-26 lead on the Indians.

Carter led Tusculum with 11 points in the first half, while Shown had six points and 10 rebounds. Edwards paced Catawba with a game-high 13 points in the first half, but the Indians were just 11-for-33 from the field as a team.

The Pioneers scored on four of their first five possessions of the second half to move out to a 40-26 lead following a Flynn putback with 17:57 to play.  Catawba cut the margin to eight at 42-34 on a jumper by Little with 14:07 to go, but back-to-back three-pointers from Flynn gave the Pioneers a 50-34 lead with 10:16 on the clock.

Tusculum took its biggest lead of the afternoon at 68-45 when Nick Spinks connected on a jumper with 3:10 to go, and James Clay closed out the scoring by hitting a layup underneath with 19 seconds to go.
Jumper finished the game with eight points and three blocked shots, while Nick Spinks had seven points and three boards. Tusculum cashed in 10 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.

The Pioneers ended the game with a 39-37 rebounding edge over the Indians, while both teams had 12 turnovers. The Pioneers went 10-for-17 from the free-throw line and the Indians struggled to a 4-for-10 performance at the stripe.

Catawba travels to Mars Hill on Wednesday night for a 8 p.m. scheduled tip-off.
